Trade and Industry Dinner with the Lord Mayor and Vince Cable

Imagine my surprise when an expensive looking invitation, encircled in gold gloss arrived at my office from the Lord Mayor of London.

Immediately I jumped onto WikiPedia and undertsood that of course the Lord Mayor of London is the official historical title – not the recent political position currently held by Boris Johnson.

On the evening I suited myself up in black tie only to find that my best dress shirt had gone walkabout – I briefly considered buying another on the way before opting for dress shirt number 2 – a tight fit to say the least! Still it would keep me puffed up I suppose.

Once I arrived at the grand Mansion House I felt like I’d arrived – mixing with established titans of business, Chairmans and Chief Executives of FTSE 100′s as well as Vine Cable (Trade and Industry secretary) and the Mayor and Mayoress.

We were called in one-by-one to be introduced to David Wootton (Lord Mayor of London) and his wife before entering the palatial ‘Egyptian Hall’ to be greeted by champagne. The dinner was succulent and the company was friendly, interesting and inspiring.

Although for me, it was the experience and networking opportunities that were of prime concern, many of the attendees were eagerly waiting on the traditional post-dinner speeches.

David Wootton gave a speech about the need for the City and its financial services industry not to be bashed – highlighting the good work it does to help SME businesses across the UK to thrive.

Vince Cable gave a speech talking about the need for London’s financial elite to do more in times of austerity – which didn’t go down particularly brilliantly with most of the attendees.

Most of the other small number of SME representatives I met there were winners of the Queens Award for enterprise. I think for most of us there was a strong sense of pride and sincere enjoyment of the occasion – I for one would be delighted to attend again next year. So my message to the Lord Mayor (and to whoever it was who so graciously added my name to the list); Thank you for the kind invitation and I’ll be keenly looking out for another fancy looking invitation in 2013 !:)

Elliott King speaks at UKTI event, “London: Your Gateway to Global Growth”

On 26th January 2012 I was fortunate enough to be invited by the UKTI to be a guest speaker at an ‘Gateway to Global Growth‘ event they were holding for small and medium sized UK exporting businesses. The venue was the prestigious ‘paramount bar’ at the top of Centre Point. I can confirm that from there, the views of the City for there are truly amazing!

The crux of my talk was on MintTwist’s adventure and story-so-far of developing it’s export business in the UAE. Today MintTwist has a successful regional business based in Dubai, but it was not on easy road. Since first entering the market we had to battle with global recession, language challenges, cultural challenges, boiling desert temperatures, challenging projects and taxi drivers that think their in a Grand Prix. Still it has all been great fun, the people of the Middle East are incredibly warm and business friendly and most importantly of all – it’s all turning profitable!

Elliott King on Pension Reform

I went to the same secondary school as Robert Peston. 3 years ago I asked him to add me and MintTwist onto their expert list; in the hope that we may be invited to talk about web design, the rise of facebook the power of Google and other such topics.

You can imagine my excitement when the esteemed Dominic Laurie of BBC News phoned me up! :)

… My excitement was slightly diminished when I heard that he wanted me to discuss the impact of pension reform on the company – but in any case – I was to be aired live to the nation in just under 8 minutes time – woohay! :)

My question to the UK Government

If we want small business to export our way out of recession, should there be an easier way for small businesses to get temporary visa’s so that (non-European) regional employees can visit the UK to cross-train?

FOR THE ATTENTION OF:
Frank Dobson MP,
Holborn and St Pancras

Dear Frank Dobson,

Our small (25 people) and very fast growing (we are employing 10+ new people each year) Digital Agency business has been working on growing an export business in the UAE (to act as a spring board for the wider region).

We are receiving fantastic help from the UKTI in this regard (via Passport to Export and then Gateway to Global Growth).

We invested in the UAE to setup a local business and employed a local GM. We have started to make sales but the local GM needs more support.

We applied for a UK visa for him (a Pakistani National) to visit the UK for 2-weeks to cross-train.

Despite us using a specialist lawyer to go through the application process the visa was rejected on ‘inappropriate reasons’.

This will seriously jeopardize our ability to grow the UAE as an export market.

My question to the Government:
If we want small business to export our way out of recession, should there be an easier way for small businesses to get temporary visa’s so that (non-European) regional employees can visit the UK to cross-train?

Yours sincerely,
Elliott King,
Director,
MintTwist Ltd
